Activity Morning

Saturday 13th February, 10.00am to 12.00pm in the Large Hall.

We are holding an activity morning for children aged 5 and upwards and adults.  The main activity will be based around creating or painting a picture of a story of hope from the Bible.  These pictures can then be entered into the Bible Society Painting Competition (click logo to the right).

We shall also sing some songs, play some games, enjoy some group work and have some refreshments.  It will be an all-age version of our holiday club.

There will be no charge for the event.  So if you are an adult, come along with or without a child and if you are a child come along with or without a grown-up.

Challenging Morning Services

On 10th January we come together for our Covenant Service to remember our covenant relationship with God.  The service emphasises God’s readiness to enfold us in generous love and our response is to accept God’s will for us.

On 17th we celebrate our Church Anniversary.  The Grove Church was opened in January 142 years ago!  (On the Saturday evening,16th at 7.00 pm, the church will resound with music played by the Sheffield Salvation Army Corps Band.)

On 24th we welcome a visiting preacher, the Curate from St. Margaret’s Church, to help us to focus on the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity.  (We also have a lunch-time service on Thursday 21st at 12.30 to pray for Christian Unity.)

The evening service, at 6.00 pm on 24th will provide an experience of the interdenominational style of worship of the Taizé Community.  The peaceful atmosphere and haunting music of Taizé services can lift many hearts to heaven.

On 31st our Superintendent Minister will be leading our worship.

We hope to welcome visitors at all our services.

Guides' Centenary Celebrations

A very large congregation braved the driving rain to attend the morning Family Parade Service on 1 November led by the minister, the Revd. Greg Haynes and Local Preacher, Mr Phil Maud.

During this year we are celebrating the Centenary of Girl Guiding and the service took three themes from their Adventure 100 Centenary Challenge.  “Look up high” was the theme that led to our opening prayers of praise with a Rainbow sitting on the top of a stepladder, and a Brownie, a Guide and a Ranger on the lower steps, all holding binoculars.

The second theme, “Flashback”, included a presentation of the history of the movement with an illustration from every decade.  Presentations were then made by Guide Leaders and the Scout District Commissioner before each unit and section renewed their respective promises.  Every adult, who had been a Guide or a Scout in their younger days, was invited by the Group Scout Leader to repeat their promise; a reminder of the part and place of the uniformed organisation in the life of the Grove.

The final theme, “Future”, presented the challenge to young and old alike “to do your best” with the help of God, as we thought about what we would do to change the world if “we were in charge”.  The Grove congregation was then asked to bring, during Advent, their change each week to “change” the world.  We shall use the money to buy presents through Christian Aid, goats, ducks, fruit trees etc., to help some of the world’s poorest communities.

Our final hymn, “I’ll go in the strength of the Lord” was sung with great gusto accompanied by the Grove orchestra and offered a final encouragement to us all.  The National Anthem was sung, the Colours returned with the rain stopping just in time for the uniformed organisations to march out of the church to the Grove Centre for refreshments.
